The Different Types of School Buses
All school buses are unmistakable, with that vivid yellow that alerts drivers. They all conform to high federal standards, and are the safest way to get kids to school. But if you look a little closer, they come in a few varying sizes and shapes, for different purposes and passenger loads. Fittingly, the different types of school buses are known as A, B, C, and D.
Type A
10-16 passengers
Type A school busses are the smallest type, built on a cutaway van chassis. Passengers board through a door behind the front wheels, while the driver has another door on the left side of the vehicle. There are two subcategories for this model: A-1 has a weight rating of less than 10,000 pounds, while A-2 can accommodate more. The weight includes the vehicle, passengers, fuel, and all other items inside the bus.
Type B
10-30 passengers
Type B is significantly larger, built on a stripped chassis with a passenger door located behind the front wheels. The engine is partly housed beneath and behind the windshield, next to the driver’s seat. Like Type A buses, they’re divided into two weight classes: B-1 is under 10,000 pounds, while B-2 can carry more. These buses have been used less frequently in recent years.
Type C
10-54 passengers
Type C is the conventional bus most often seen transporting children, with the engine located at the front of the vehicle. Its foundation can vary: a chassis with a hood assembly, a cutaway truck chassis, or a truck chassis with a cab. Its vehicle weight rating is over 10,000 pounds, often between 23,500 and 29,500 pounds.
Type D
10-54 passengers
Type D is the largest version. It resembles a public transit bus with a flat front. The engine isn’t in front of the windshield, but can be mounted in the front, middle, or rear. Accordingly, it can be called a “forward engine” or “rear engine” bus. Its gross weight rating is more than 10,000 pounds, and usually between 25,000 and 36,000 pounds.
