Bus Maintenance Tips For Spring
You and your bus have made it through the long winter, and now the road ahead looks clear and bright. Make the transition properly with these bus maintenance tips for spring.
A Thorough Wash
There’s nothing quite as satisfying as hosing down your vehicle and washing away the last of the salt. All that salt and brine on the road was great for melting the ice and keeping your passengers safe; it was also great at clinging to your bus’s paint and clear coat. You can finally rinse it all out from your bus’s body and undercarriage. Pay special attention to wheels and fenders for this spring cleaning task.
A Tire Tune-up
Tire damage is nothing to ignore, and you can finally get a good look at your tires with all that grime gone. Be thorough and stick to your checklist.
Tread
It’s time for the time-honored penny test. Insert one into your tire tread to find out how deep it is. If the tread gets to, at least, Lincoln’s hair, you should be good to go. If the tread is above the President’s head, though, you likely need to replace your tires.
Pressure
The fluctuation in temperatures will have an effect on your tire pressure. Check to make sure they don’t need to be inflated further. If one tire seems to be more deflated than the others, inspect it carefully for leaks or other damage.
Rotation
Spring is the natural time to rotate your bus tires, especially if you’ve felt any out-of-the-ordinary vibrations. Your mechanic can rotate, balance, and align your wheels if necessary.
Wiper Blade Inspection
As winter wore on, you might have noticed that your vehicle’s windshield became harder to clean. Wiper blades can only push so much around before wearing down. If your wipers are noisy or leaving streaks, it’s a sign that they need to be replaced. Ask your technician to look for any cracks or chips in the windshield, too.
Fluid Levels Checked
Bus drivers have a schedule for checking and changing their vehicle’s oil, but the other fluids don’t get as much close attention. Take the opportunity to check the levels of:
- Radiator coolant
- Windshield wiper fluid
- Transmission fluid
- Brake fluid
- Power steering fluid
