Non-CDL Buses: A Practical and Versatile Option for School and Church Buses
Having a church bus dedicated to facilitating your group outings is a game changer. Whether you own a bus, or take frequent advantage of church bus rentals, the benefits are in your favor. But certainly, there are times when a large school or coach bus isn’t what you require.
Depending on the size of your church group or youth group, a non-CDL bus might suit your needs.
Non-CDL Buses
Most standard school buses require a CDL for operation. To be clear, a CDL is a commercial driver's license. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, a bus driver is required to carry a CDL if:
- A bus is designed to transport 16 or more passengers
- A bus has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more
There are many group transportation needs that require such a bus. But if your religious organization is smaller than 16 people, renting a full-size motorcoach doesn't make sense. In fact, it’s likely more of a hassle than it’s worth.
Whether renting, or looking for a non-CDL bus for sale, simplify your small group travel. From day trips to weekend excursions, a smaller vehicle is the right approach.
Church Bus Insurance and Costs
Insurance is a cost consideration that pertains to any vehicle, and a church bus is no different. And insurance requirements differ regarding church bus sales compared to church bus rentals. Whatever route you’re choosing for your church bus acquisition, verify the details with your insurance carrier. After all, some options make more sense than others.
There are additional cost considerations too, such as general obtainment or renewal fees. For instance, renewing a non-CDL license is likely going to cost less than renewing a CDL license. Fees and costs vary by state, but generally, a non-CDL license is less costly.
But like any vehicle, a non-CDL bus is going to have maintenance to consider. Many organizations find benefits in renting, as these maintenance costs tend to fall on the owner. And regarding fuel, it goes without saying that a smaller vehicle uses less fuel than a larger one. These are simply considerations for easing the overall cost burden of the vehicle.
Plus, since your driver won’t be required to have a CDL, this is a benefit in and of itself. Anyone can drive this vehicle (provided they have a standard driver’s license, of course). When renting a larger bus, a fee for a licensed driver is typically incorporated into the final costs.
Different Types of School Buses
CDL and non-CDL requirements aren’t the only differences when it comes to buses and bus sizes. While Type C is the most common type of school bus, there are alternatives to be aware of.
A Type C school bus is the standard and can carry more than 70 passengers. It has a GVWR of over 21,500 pounds. Overall, this class of school has proven to be the most reliable for all sorts of purposes. But if you need something smaller, then consider Type A or Type B buses.
While many Type A buses still require a CDL, they are less than half the size of a Type C bus. For instance, Type A buses typically transport between 14 and 33 passengers. Type B buses are larger, carrying up to 38 passengers. And it’s important to note that even though Type B is smaller, it meets all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for school buses.
If you pursue any of the types of school buses, you’ll find additional details regarding each. Type B buses, for example, can be categorized further into Type B-1 and Type B-2 buses. Essentially, these buses might be smaller, but they still have plenty of options. And ultimately, they might serve just the purpose you require.
